About me

I work in an representative impressionist style, mostly in oils or pastels, and both are versatile opaque mediums, my favourite - enjoying the textures and contrasts achieved in oil with expressive brush marks and palette knives, or the satisfying colour saturations and the lacy layers of subtle colour interactions as the pastel marks are laid down on the surface.

All kinds of subject matter can inspire, but it is the effect of light that attracts me the most-the atmospheric feeling. This is often a landscape for me, but it can also be flowers, or a sunlit interior. I paint restful, contemplative and joyous moments of the everyday, and celebrate the beauty that is present within our contemporary surroundings. Contrasts of light and shadows and colourare an ever evolving interest. Sometimes, we are so busy living, we forget to see.

I explore how relationships between colour temperatures can intensify the sense of the light/shade also. Plein air painting has become an important part of my practice, although I am equally happy in my studio work.

I teach art classes outside (en plein air) for students enjoying how to paint from their surroundings, and I tutor adult art learners in class and studio settings. Painting demonstrations for art groups throughout Northern Ireland are enormous fun! I have begun to do demonstrations in France too.
I am honoured to be a Past President of the Ulster Society of Women Artists (elected 2018), an organisation that celebrates the many talented women artists in Northern Ireland. I am also equally honoured to be a Past Chairperson for The Pastel Society of Ireland (elected 2024 - 2025), which celebrates the many expressive ways this versatile medium can be used.
